 Abstract

Due to the risk of obesity, women ≥60 years of age should really be careful in keeping their weight. The purpose of this research was to study the risk of obesity for women aged 60 years and above. Also comparing them with sample at the final stage of adolescence; is there any change in the percentage of obesity. A sample of 80 elderly women from Hargo Dedali nursing home, as well as elderly club in Ngagel and Erlangga. As many as 564 female teenagers from FISIP Unair and FK UHT were measured. The variables were height, weight, triceps and subscapular skinfolds. There were several other variables measured in the elderly women, such as calves and suprailiaca skinfolds, and circemferences of arm, thigh, and calf; and the sistole and diastole blood pressure.  Anova using BonFerroni correction was utilized for calculating the differences between groups. The researchers also exercised descriptive statistics as well as calculating the frequencies. The results showed that there were significant differences between the two groups of samples in the averages of height, weight, as well as subscapular and triceps fat skinfolds. Gradual changes occurred in the averages of triceps, calves, and subscapular fat skinfolds. There were changes of the averages of height, weight, arm circumference, thigh circumference, calf circumference, at the group of elderly, year after year, and the differences were significant between the age groups of the elderly women. There were more—54%—elderly who had normal BMI category, and only 11% were obese. The percentage of underweight elderly was 18%. The number of obese elderly women—11% was greater than those of adolescents—only 0.36%. It can be concluded that obesity among elderly women in Surabaya although greater than obese adolescents, was not alarming. People should be more concern regarding the number of underweight elderly. More over, it is advisable for people ≥60 years of age to have the BMI range of 25-27 to avoid certain diseases including osteoporosis.
